portrait commission FAQs
Do you paint from life or photos?
In order to achieve the realism of my portraits, each one is created from a photographic sitting with the child.
The sitting takes about 45 minutes to one hour, and is an opportunity for me to get to know your child; their looks, personality, and spirit. It's also a chance for me to hear from you about your child's traits and quirks, which all helps to get a full picture of their unique character. During this time I will take many photos of your child sitting, standing, all the while chatting about their favourite things.
How much do portraits cost?
Portrait costs vary depending on the size of the canvas chosen, the age of the child(ren), multiple children, and the complexity of any significant details such as clothing. As a guide, the following prices are for a single child with a plain background (excluding framing) for 2020:
16x16 inch - $1,200
16x20 inch - $1,300
20x20 inch - $1,500
24x24 inch - $2,000
More sizes are available in both square and traditional portrait styles. I'm happy to work with you to determine the best size to meet your needs.
How long does it take to complete?
Completed portraits can take anywhere from 8-14 weeks to complete, longer if it is a larger portrait, particularly over the cooler months. If you have a deadline, please let me know.
What if I have more than one child?
I am happy to capture more than one child in a single portrait.
Please be aware that the size of the portrait will need to be larger to accommodate not only the additional child(ren), but to allow room for all subjects to ‘breathe’ in the painting. Additional children also incur an extra cost.
You may want to consider commissioning an individual portrait of each child instead. In this case, I offer a 10% discount on each additional portrait within the same family. I am more than happy to discuss which option will best suit your family.
Where do sittings take place?
Children are at their best when they are in comfortable surroundings, which is why I typically travel to you (within the Canberra region), though I can arrange to have you visit my home studio if preferred or if you’re from interstate.
I recommend arranging a time mid-morning, and I am happy to schedule a time on weekdays or weekends.
What do I need to do before the sitting?
I recommend that children are fed, dressed and ready before the sitting. Depending on the age of the child it may also be necessary to arrange a sitting time after a morning nap, allowing enough time for them to be awake and alert before I arrive. I recommend that you provide a small treat of their choosing that they can have on completion of the sitting.
I recommend children wear simple clothes without patterns in a colour that suits their skin tone. Avoid brand names, sports wear or excessively detailed clothing.
What payment methods do you accept?
All payments can be made in either cash, direct deposit or PayPal. I require a 30% non-refundable deposit of the total amount on or before the sitting. I'm happy to arrange payment plans and gift vouchers, though final payment is to be made on or before the date of delivery. Please contact me for more details: or use the contact form.
Can I get it framed?
Yes! I can arrange affordable, modern timber framing, just let me know if you would like to include a framing cost in the quote. The cost of framing will depend on the size of the portrait and the materials used. If you have specific framing requirements please let me know.
